Doctors play a central role in managing an injured worker’s health and wellbeing and are vital in influencing health and return to work outcomes.
In most cases, an injured worker will rely on their GP for advice, coordinating medical treatment and services, and to assist with their overall recovery, rehabilitation and return to work.
This includes:
- Monitoring and reviewing progress
- Prescribing safe and clinically appropriate medications in accordance with WorkSafe’s pharmacy policy
- Referring to other healthcare services and monitoring the effectiveness of these services
- Discussing the health benefits of safe work and emphasising that work is an integral part of recovery
- Assessing and certifying capacity and completing the certificate of capacity
- Identifying any barriers to return to work
- Communicating a patient’s capacity with their employer
Once you have been given a claim number and a case manager from your insurance company (the details which your employer will give you), our doctor will discuss with you the duties you may or may not be able to perform at work. He will then complete the WorkCover Certificate of Capacity for you to pass on to your employer or insurer. You should follow up with doctor every 28 days or so for a review of your condition.
Transport Accident Commission (TAC)
If you have been injured in a transport accident speak to our doctor or call the TAC on 1300 654 329 or visit the TAC website to find out what to do after an accident.
The TAC pays for the treatment and support services you need to get your life back on track after a transport accident. This includes medical treatment, rehabilitation and disability services and things like home services and child care.
As you recover from a major trauma event you may start thinking about getting back to work. Work provides both financial and social support and can help your recovery.
You do not have to be full recovered to get back to work – returning to work can be part of your recovery. You may need to return to work gradually, work shorter hours or do different duties.
Our doctor will assess what you can and can’t do to safety return to work and the most appropriate treatments for you.
